Arrow Think you have a good spare tire? Think again.

Pay attention to how old your trailer tires are, and especially how old that spare tire is.

Turns out you want the spare tire to be the NEWEST tire on the trailer, not the oldest

As I discovered, the spare tire becomes aged and fragile because it is not rolling down the road. The use of the tires is what slows the aging process.

Carrying an old tire as a spare tire might seem like a good use for an old tire, but in fact it will become unusable soon afterwards, just sitting there. When you actually go and install that old spare tire on the road axle, you are now making a bet with rather poor odds. Will that old tire hold together? For how long? At what speeds?

From here on, my spare tire will be less than five years old.
