Mounting CDIs in the ebox... best way to protect them?
All this CDI talk got me thinking about my own (which I think is giving me troubles) and how it's mounted in the electrical box... and how can we best protect them.
So the CDIs have 2 tabs/ears on them to secure them in the ebox. Bolting the CDI tight to the ebox seems to me like it would share all the vibrations of the ebox. But on the flip side... being against the ebox might help the CDI dissipate any heat it generates.
So which is the greater danger to a CDI... vibrations or heat? Does the CDI even have any heat issues?
To help protect the CDI... would it be better to wrap it in foam inside the ebox to protect against vibrations but where it might get hotter
or... heat sink paste the it to the ebox so it can better shed heat but where it'll experience full vibrations?

you could put some rubber between the bolts and the CDI, thus creating a somewhat vibration absorbtion. but you would loose the contact with the Box...not much heat disapation threw a Plastic box, onto a aluminum plate to a Plastic xbox...

Ah... yes... forgot about the metal mounting plate behind the CDI that it bolts to. I have that in my plastic 1200 ebox.
Seems to me, if the Polaris engineers were worried about vibrations in the CDI... they would have mounted it differently. With that in mind, I put some heat sink paste on the back of my CDI to better conduct any heat it may generate to the metal plate. Wonder if that was a good idea or not? Doesn't seem like it should hurt anything.
I'm still curious about vibrations though.

Why not just cushion the whole e box mounting if you are concerned about vibration?

Yeah... on my boat... the ebox is strapped atop a layer of foam cushion... so that probably helps. But on the skis... that would be harder to do.
I was more curious what/if folks did anything different when mounting the CDIs in the ebox. And if there were particular issues (heat/vibes) that the CDIs are more sensitive to.
What's your experience?

my thoughts are it doesnt need to be protected from vibrations/heat. you know how hot an engine compartment on a car or truck get when its 100 degrees out and youve had it running? how many vibrations does your car body get? the ECM is gernally bolted somewhere inside the engine compartment OR under the dash. both VERY HOT places, with TONS of vibrations. dont hear of ECMs going out often
