    Which ski?

I know this is the yami forum, but I am looking at a 2005 Kawasaki stx 12f for $3500 and a 2004 a Yami fx140 that I they want $4500 for. I don't know what the bottom dollar will be for either ski. Both have under 100 hrs. I have looked at the yami but that's it is in good shape with some of the rubber needing to be reglued. It is for my 12 yr old daughter. Please let me know what you think. I will have to travel to see the Kawasaki. Thanks

Since they are both 4 strokes I think you can't go wrong either way. I think the Kawasaki is faster as it has more hp and cc. The yamaha r1 motor in the fx140 is considered to be the most successful engine in motorcycles. So I think it is up to the looks and price and maybe speed of your looking for something for your daughter.

I'm not trying to troll or start shit, but it sounds like the 12F's of that time had some ECU issues. You may want to look into that before you make a purchase. http://www.greenhulk.net/forums/showthread.php?t=205240

    From that thread...

The 12f's did have this problem, not all the years (I know 05 & 06 had issues) & the problem wasn't the pistons, it was the ECU advancing the timing too far, & the motor self destructed which as you have discovered if you ran premium fuel there wasn't a problem, & with more fuel containing ethanol coming to the market during this time made the problem even worse. A good friend had purchased a new 06 model & by the spring of 07 is was getting its 3rd motor installed under warranty, Kawasaki did at that time replace the ECU to take care of this problem, he never drove again to find out if it was ok, he sold it the day he picked it up from the dealership that repaired it. So after rebuilding your motor you need to address the ECU problem so it doesn't repeat itself.

Actually the Kawasaki turned out to be a 2006 and I can buy for $3200. Guy sent pics of total ski and is immaculate..looking at tomorrow!

Are you fresh or salt water riding? The Kawasaki has potential issues in the exhaust manifold that can stem from salt riding if not properly flushed. If both the same, I'd go Yamaha. Buddy had a 12f and wasn't impressed with look and ride.

That FX is a great ski. I rode that ski for 6-7 hours a day for almost three years and it was perfect. Faster then the newer HO's. I used to race them occasionally when we were bored, good solid ski. If it comes with a trailer id show up with 4 if not maybe 3500 cash dollars. Check out the hose clamps and also the motor mounts. You dont want rusty clamps all over, and you can slightly lift the motor on the motor mounts and where the exhaust manifold are to see if there is excessive play. Neither are too expensive to replace and will get you familiar with the layout of your ski..im imparital to yamis, most mechanics are as well. I know of only one person that even know what a yamaha ski looks like under the seat, while many people can repair the yamahas with ease. good luck

I bought the kawasaki. The thing was immaculate! Engine and components were spotless. I ran it this afternoon and it ran great. Guy always had it serviced at dealership, and thats where we met to do the sale. I know Yamis have a great reputation, but this one blew the yami I looked at out of the water as for as being taken care of. I am very satisfied and only spent $3200.
