PTO cover has something spring-loaded holding it on?

I took all the bolts out of my PTO cover, and it comes off about a half inch, but then something is holding it on internally and it gets pulled back onto the motor. Is this the starter spring? Something else? I'm at a loss and don't want to force it.

Thanks man! I also think it might not clear the engine mount on the lower left? anyone know if it's actually possible to remove the PTO cover while the engine is in the boat?

Yes it is possible to remove the PTO without pulling the engine. It is a pita and in many ways makes the job harder than it needs to be.
You will need to pull the left engine mount.

Put some wood under the engine in the rear after pulling mounts. Then pull cover.
