    1996 SLTX help. Running issues.

    I have a 1996 SLTX 1050.

Ran great was fast as hell.

A bearing in the pump went bad and it sat while we waited to get a new pump.

Put the new pump on and it's never run right since.

It starts up and runs great at idle in and out of the water. In the water full throttle from a dead stop takes off great. About 43-45mph it starts to either tac out or cavitation. Back of the throttle it does 45mph, full throttle it just hits what seems like a rev limiter and drops to 40mph.

Also though I'm unsure of what prop came with the used pump we bought...
So could this be cavitation due to a smaller prop off a smaller motor ski?

We did put a new/used MFA in. It works good. Ran the same with the old one.

Also it has autolite 63 plugs I think not the Ngk, ones it calls for. Upon putting the correct plugs in it runs bad. No power.

You may have several issues, not just one problem.

What rpm is the engine turning at wide open throttle?

    What is MFA?

Which NGK spark plugs did you install?

Ohm check the spark plug wires and coils.

New jet pump? Did you reuse the old impeller, or install a different impeller that came with the 'new' jet pump?

    ya u don't need a new jet pump ,

    rebuild yours

make sure ur impeller is correct

get the right plugs and gapped correct

make sure all fuel lines are replaced and carbs r rebuilt

make sure exhaust water system is not plugged also

also make sure the ride plate and intake grate are sealed tight

Ok got some more information I forgot to add.

    MFA is the display?

Rpms full throttle is 6500ish. That's around 42mph. I can hold it closer to 5800 or before the limiter and see upwards of 45mph.

I'm thinking its taching out like it should, and there is nothing wrong with how is running. I'm thinking it has the wrong prop.

I'm thinking the prop was replaced. The wear ring was a bit scratched up from when the bearing fell out and locked the prop up. But we checked it and its still round and not warped. But it isn't smooth.

Other info: I have an R&D intake gate. (This was put on in an effort to fix any cavitation)
Spark plugs are autolite 63 plugs

In the event that the pump is the problem.. Can I use one off a 96 slx. I believe it is a 780? That ski was awesome, until someone ran it one with another ski while it was beached. It outran bran new Polaris skis. Haha.

I know that pump is good. Maybe upgrade the prop to a larger pitch?

Use the correct NGK spark plugs. Takes the substitute aspect out of the question. Must be the resistor type NGK plugs. If it runs poorly with the correct factory specified spark plugs, something is wrong.

Pull the jet pump and inspect what you have. Impeller blade clearance to the wear ring? The maximum clearance is considered to be .020 inches all the way around and .010 inches or less is considered quite good.

Which part number on the impeller hub?

Condition of the impeller blades? The stator vanes?

Has the jet pump base ever been removed from the hull?

Is there contiguous sealant around the perimeter of the ride plate (especially around the front edges) and around the inside of the pump tunnel where it mates with the jet pump base?

The Polaris digital display is often called the MFD (Multi-Function Display).

When we swapped the pumps, the "new" one did not come with a wear ring. Not sure of clearance.

Yes the pump was removed, and yes we used plenty of sealant.

I'm thinking the clearance on the wear ring is not within specs. In that case I want to put the slx pump on. My only concern is are the impellers from the 780 and the 1050 different? This may be my problem in the first place. The pump may have been bought used from a smaller motor.. Again I'm unsure. This was all prior to me owning it. But I was somewhat involved.

I've looked on eBay at different impellers and it seems there is at least a 13/17 and a 17/23..

It does, I'm thinking that's the problem. Ill need to sell my other pump assembly, to afford the correct prop.
