Can I use Polaris snowmobile pistons in a watercraft?

I'm looking to use 98 XC 700 sled pistons in a 98 slth 700 watercraft is there any reason I can't? I notice the rings are different and the watercraft has a hole in the intake side? What is the purpose of the hole and is it needed? The reason I want to do this is the sled pistons are way cheaper than the watercraft pistons and I already have a set. Thanks

Oh I can think of a dozen or more reasons not to try such foolery.

sled pistons are cheaper for a good reason

    consider this:

..how often can you run a snowmobile at full throttle
..what are the possible thermodynamic consequences of running an air cooled designed piston in a water cooled engine

Sell the sled pistons are get some real PWC pistons..if money is THAT tight, I'll see you some pistons at my cost +10%....

this kinda reminds me of the time a ski showed up at my place with a battery composed of 300 d-cells in a homemade pack. Guys dad owned a dollar store..wanted to know why the batteries weren't charging and were always leaking goo.

or when a ski showed up with a set of Honda 750 motorcycle carbs on a badly welded manifold adapter.

The sled is liquid cooled and runs at higher rpm and the sled pistons I have are forged not cast so if anything they are higher quality pistons than the pwc uses. Also the pwc and sled engines are very similar in design. I am quite certain they will work fine I am just wondering if anyone has tried this?

The sled pistons will work, but not the sled rings, they are designed for nikasil cylinders, not steel sleeves.

    Different rings for Nicasil?

The Weber piston and rings (MSX 110/150) work for both stock Nicasil plated cylinders and for steel sleeves. But these are 4-stroke engines I speak of...

I say try them and report back!

    Cheers!

I bought some for a Polaris sled to use in my pro785, bore was the same and so was the pin lenght and diameter but the hole was off by about 1/8" to low . I was very disappointed as I too was trying to save money by using sled pistons . I haven't heard of specific rings for nicasil. I used the same rigs on both and never had any kind of issues

I'd do it. why not? Aftermarket sled pistons and cylinders are used all the time on Polaris motors. Look at EME motors.

We used to use Polaris 440 pistons in our 440Brut Wetjets, what you need to check is that bore & stroke are the same, piston pin diameter & the pin placement(measure from top of piston to top of piston pin) is the same & that the piston ring pins are in the same place.
