I've seen multiple examples of Nicasil failure. The earliest caught example I've found was a hairline crack lower in the cylinder (in the ring sweep area) from where the pistons had rested for years. I could snag my finger nail on the crack.

That tiny bit of pitting I see in the pics... looks to be above the piston ring sweep area. I would ask... can you snag a finger nail on it?

I would give it a quick de-glazing hone... and check again. I've seen a questionable mark develop into the obvious start of a flake after de-glazing. (Nicasil safe... Aluminum Oxide ball hone)

    Cheers!

Yes it turned out to be nikasil starting to lift from the bore.
Thanks to "KOSH" on here I managed to get 2 Darton sleeves at a very good price and thanks to his generousity I had them here in 5 days from AUS, hope I can return the favour sometime John.

Turns out that in the mean time the guy that does my engine machining work managed to locate suitable sleeves and has them fitted. I have not seen the work yet as I have been to busy to collect. So I have 2 spare sleeves.
If the alternative sleeves work out I will post details, the total cost to supply an fit the sleeves, bore, hone and deck the block was €220 (approx $300US)
Lets hope these alternatives work out

    hello ,

I looking your post and , just verifie that your new fire piston ring , the fisrt one on the top are in chrome steel , because if the ring was the original on piston 106660 weber ( black one ) you will have a prematured failure and lost your compression quickly. And you must open your motor again .
It's possible to find this special ring (special fabrication for original piston )Attachment 316924Attachment 316925Attachment 316926

    Good luck

    Phil

I only ever managed to get one set of new rings, don't ask how it was very good luck , I cant get them again
From my understanding they are only supplied with the pistons

It is my understanding (and please correct me if I am wrong.
The original pistons fitted are the 095, these are suitable for nikasil only.
the newer pistons 606 are suitable for use on the nikasil and sleeved cylinders. Weber only supply the pistons and rings as a package. Maybe Weberpower can supply the rings seperate, but I have never tried to source

Please re-send the attachments. There is a technical problem which causes attachments to sometimes not work properly.

I'm not familiar with their being differences in Weber pistons for watercraft (095/606)? There are differences from marine to snow applications. But I do know you can only buy the piston/ring assemblies... and not just rings. I've done 2 Weber rebuilds with sleeved cylinders... and Randy (WeberPower) has always told me that the Weber pistons (i.e. the rings) are fine on either Nicasil or steel sleeves. And they worked well for me.

There is also CP pistons Randy sells... those are forged... and you can buy just ring sets for them. I put a new set of rings on some CP pistons for a Hydrospace S4 engine recently.

And I'm running some trial Wiseco forged pistons in my MSX 150 that Randy gave me to try... and these, like the CP, have separate ring sets you can buy.

On the CP and Wiseco pistons... the top ring is the shiney (chrome looking) one... and the lower ring is the dull or black one.

    Cheers!
