    cardon seal

Can anyone explain the purpose of the carbon ring? I thought it was a water seal to keep water from entering the boat through the drive shaft. I was looking at my bellows and I could move it from side to side. I dont see how the drive shaft becomes water tight via the carbon seal.

You are correct, it seals water out. Side to side movement is normal but they do wear out and start to leak. How many hrs are on yours?
