    NEWBIE HERE: Found a 2001 Yamaha XL800

    Hi All,

I'm totally new to jet skis

Found a deal for a 2001 Yamaha XL800, with 252 hours. Seller claims only requires a new wear ring. I checked it out yesturday, seems to run fine.

What should I look for in used one? It's a 2-stroke.

He wanted $1600, but we settled for $1300 w/trailer. Should I get it?

As long as it's clean and with a trailer it seems like a decent deal... I'd take into consideration the hours though it's prob going to need a new top end soon... And all you can do is hope that the crank and all crankcase seals are good but depending on the shape of the hull and all it's hard to say...

Also I'd take a good compression tester with you and test the compression as well b4 you even think about buying

Is a new top end job a DIY? OR a dealer must?

Its a DIY if you are fairly mechanical. Simple engine to work on.

Test compression and post back with numbers

Any idea on what I should look for? If passes test, I will get it on the spot...

Not really sure about that specific engine but usually between 140-150psi whats important is that both cylinders are close to each other.

I mean with 250 hours it should be pretty low my 1300 has 150 hours and 123psi across the board. Which isn't horrible but it could be better

go to forum, yamaha, how to and FAQ, and then there should be a list of sticky threads at the top. check there first, if not there then try the google search bar on the left side of the page, works much better than the one in the top right corner IMO
