"the right stuff"
put a nice fat bead so it's covering the gap & with a latex glove on carefully run your finger 1 time over the bead so it pushes the "stuff" through the other side & grabs good. If you try to run your finger a 2nd time it will not look too smooth & gets messy. Use baby wipes to carefully wipe off the residue before it dries.

or mask off both sides of the crack with tape then fill with "great stuff" and remove excess with your finger.....then i smoothed it out by spitting in my palm and dipping my finger in the spit so the "stuff" wont stick to you finger....an old trick i learned from caulking expantion joints.....gross but works like a charm
