Arrow VOIP services, ATA devices, SIP and 'free' long distance telephone calls

I am currently using several Voice Over IP services, including VOIP.MS and Google Voice, plus OBiTalk.

I am using an OBIHAI OBi202 ATA box to link my home telephones with the VOIP Internet services.

I am interested in understanding how many others are doing similar things and have either an ATA box or a SIP enabled telephony service.

Of particular interest is the zero cents per minute cost of unlimited telephone calls made between these devices, regardless of which countries these devices are calling between.

Peering services such as SIP Broker allow free SIP calls between various SIP services, so I can call people who are using other SIP services and other brands of ATA devices for free. There is some configuration required and of course knowing the correct codes to route the calls.

iNUM is an interesting way of simplifying the call routing between VOIP users.

    * Note: Google Voice has announced that direct outbound calling from Obihai devices using XMPP will no longer work after May 15, 2014
Until then, free outbound calling continues to work.

You can link your Google voice in the app sipdroid and it will automatically create a pbxes.org and have it linked using wifi or 3g 4g signals. If you have any questions about this I can answer Alot of the questions as I work with this and all other electronics. I also use a grandstream sip gate setup at my business land lines linked to a 3cx pbx also hooked up to sipdroid app or others and uses the offices landlines on my phone to call out on and just acts as an extension

We tend to just get online and use skYpe to talk to relatives mainly in The Philippines, but others in Finland, France, Singapore. But the Singaporean connection has free international calling on his phone (company pays for it) and can call us whenever he wants to.

I am familiar with Skype and use it for some calls.

Who is using a SIP app for VOIP access on their smartphone, in particular an iPhone?

Which app are you using for SIP access? With which VOIP services?

Halcyon (my wife) has recently been using Viber without video and Tango for video calls. It works well from US to The Philippines, Singapore, and Finland. Of course, the person you're Vibing or Tangoing with also has to have the app.

this will work fine if the other country you are calling have internet access. here in the us im using vonage , not free but very cheap compare to a regular att line ,lol they are expensive.

one example will be cuba, there is not internet access whatsoever for anyone in the island ,other than government agencies .
    sad very sad.

Cuba would be 88 cents per minute for me using VOIP.MS. Even calling Guantanamo (which I shall not be calling).

VOIP has completely rewritten the game for long distance (and local) telephony

Google Voice has cut the cost to zero cents per minute for US long distance calling.

Services like ipkall and software SIP clients (I use Acrobits on iPhone) allow Google Voice calls to originate from anywhere in the Internet world and arrive at any US phone number. AND receive calls from any US area code to that SIP softphone anywhere in the world

Along with all the new methods and cost options is a whirlwind of configuration complexity. Keeping it simple for users is what Vonage and others are being paid for.

If you can handle the VOIP configuration yourself the costs are remarkably low. But just as important, the flexibility is enormous!
