    Question Transducer Info, Please.

Okay, so I was thinking of installing a transducer. I already have the Garmin 640 for a GPS--and I think it's compatible with a transducer.

I'm more concerned with depths, but I may also use it for fishing at some time in the future. My wife loooooooooooves her some fresh fish.

So, what should I be looking for? Brand name? Model #? I remember seeing the pic of one member here who mounted it on the rear of his ski level with the bottom. I'm guessing that would be the best place to mount it.

Anything else I need to know?

I have installed the Airmar P79 in hull transducer with good results. My depth finder reads even at 60 MPH. I like the idea of having nothing protruding from the hull. You should be able to find a compatible version of this transducer.

Dang! It looks like I jumped the gun on this one. According to the Garmin site my GPS is not compatible with anything resembling transducer/radar and the like.

I can't remember the brand, I want to say hummingbird. They make a little all in one for kayak fishermen. I remember looking at it saying it would be a great unit for a ski.

I just looked them up, nice stuff for sure! And if anybody else wants to look for them, it's "Humminbird" with no "g."

Well, I axed Garmin about it and here's what they had to say:

That Smart Transducer retails in the $250.00 area.
In my opinion, adding a Fishfinder would be a more cost effective option. Garmin offers Fishfinders starting under $100.00. Below is a link to the webpage for Garmin Fishfinders.

After Googling just WTF the NMEA 0183 means, it turns out the original P79 recommended by BryanP (Thanks for spelling Bryan correctly! It's my name, too.) should work. And I find it for $82 on Amazon.

And then if I get into fishing later, I guess I'll just have to buy yet another gadget.

There are different versions of that P79 transducer. Make sure you get one that outputs NMEA 0183
