    Slxh engine project 1050

I just bought a polaris slxh 98 1050 with a bad engine I got it home put fresh gas in it and new plugs and it fired right up but I could only get it to 4200 rpm out of water and it backfired a few times so I shut it off went and did a compression test and it read 85 psi per cylinder so I new that was the problem because I should be around 125 130ish so I took the heads off and the cylinders were perfect no scoring or putting and the wash was perfect across the board do I need to replace the whole top end or just new rings the cylinder measures 80.92mm so I'm thinking new rings but I wanted your guys opinion.

Did you hold the throttle wide open when you did the compression test? Not doing that may give you low readings.

Low compression won't cause a backfire. I bet you need an ignition update. If the compression is that low, it may be time for a rebuild, unless your gauge is just off. Its kind of odd to have all 3 read that low.

Good spark doesnt mean much if its being fired at the wrong time. Thats usually tje issue with backfiring and limited rpm.

The stamp # on the pistons suggests that top end WAS replaced.
What do the heads look like ?
What is the part # on the CDI ?

It has WSM pistons in it but they appear to be standard bore. That is unusual unless someone resleaved the cylinders or it burned a hole in the center like the Polaris do and someone just replaced the pistons. Probably did not fix the timing issue either.
