06 FXHO Motor runs, prop doesn't...mid-shaft??
Have an '06 FX HO with 165 hours
My brother took it out the other weekend idling out to the Gulf, hit the throttle just a little harder to go against the current and apparently it just started to rev with no thrust - after riding for about 14 minutes. It did not take on water and we've had no previous issues.
Engines run/sounds fine. BUT I've noticed over the last few months a metal to metal sound becoming more prominent where the mid-shaft is. I'm beginning to think it finally crapped out.
Let me know if any of you have had similar issues and what you had to do to fix this problem.

there is a planatary gear assm there that may have failed, someone with more knowledge will pop in sooner or later that knows more about that model ski

The pump liner most likely swelled and that was the metal sound especially if it was worse out of the water. The impeller could have gotten stuck and either spun off the prop shaft, stripped the threads or worse. You should be able to take the intake grate off and look in and get a better look at the impellers position.

The gear reduction does make a metal type racket noise out of the water but should always be there.

Could be the splines on the driveshaft. Most make some noise from the gear reduction as the gears wear. Pull the pump and check the end of the shaft. Or can try it again in the water, but this time looking as the drive coupler to see if it's spinning. If so, then likely the shaft.

Impeller is good, sounds good - no metal to metal. BUT inside that engine bay with the engine on sounds pretty bad. I think it''s safe to say the issue is located in the rear of the engine but I wont know until it's taken apart and inspected.
Thank you for your help guys

before you remove the engine take the pump out and check the drive shaft splines. just saying.
