Durability of the Yamaha 2012 FX Cruiser and more...

So last year I was posting here about the trip I was going to take. Moline IL to Mobile Bay, AL. All together it was 1320 miles, 7 states and 29 locks to get there. My friend Robb on his 2011 300X and I on my 2012 FX SHO Cruiser left on June 22 2013 and pulled into Mobile Bay on the following Friday. It was a trip I will never forget.

The Yamaha had 4 hours on it when I left and I had already installed the Riva Stage 1 kit, ribbon delete and rear exhaust before I even put the ski in the water. I had absolutely zero issues with the ski on the trip. Unfortunately Robb had a small issue with his that we thought was catastrophic failure. As we were crossing Kentucky Lake we laid into it a little bit and I turned to look at Robb's ski and there was white smoke a block long behind him and he lost power. He shut it off and pulled to the banks. No oil in the engine when it was hot or cold we found out the next morning. Racing my whole life I assumed all the smoke we saw was oil burning up and working its way out of the exhaust.

We couldn't find a Kawi dealership within 200 miles but we did find a Yamaha dealership. Long story short we left it there and he purchased a new 13 FX n/a and we finished the trip. The kicker is we stop back in Tennessee and pick the ski up on the way home and he takes it to the dealership at home and of all things 2 plugs went out and apparently caused the smokescreen we saw from unburned fuel according to the technician.

Has anyone heard of anything like this before, we thought the engine was toast due to no oil reading on the stick when it was hot but also when it cooled off, apparently it was just a coincidence because he rode the Kawi the rest of the year. The point of this story is I will stick with Yamaha.
