Which one should I go with....

Hi, im buying a 99 GP1200 and I've found 2 that i'm stuck between. One of them is totally stock with 55 hours and not a thing wrong with it. The other has 121 hours on it, 30 hours since fresh pistons and rings and reconditioned carbs and has a heap of mods done to it including Riva Ride Plate
    Riva Fixed Trim Tabs
    R & D Intake Grate
    Solas XO Impeller
    Worx Sponsons
    Hydro Turf
    Jettrim Seat Cover
    Umi Bars
    ODI Grips
    Riva Trim Leaver
    Tiny Tach Tachometer
    Billett Throttle Leaver
    Riva Flame Arrestors & Covers
    Jetworks Valve
    Pro-tec 150 psi Head
Oil Block Off - Runs on pre-mix
    Electric Bilge Pump
    Boyessen Reed Stuffers

The one with the mods is $900 more which is fine and i've gone over it and the compression is fine and no cracks or any damage at all. But will it be reliable? Or should I go for the ski with less hours. It would be great to hear what you guys think. Thanks

Personally, I would go with the stock one, and put bits on yourself.
You know it's done right, and $900 will probably get you most of the bits on your list!
iv'e got a 99 one with 37 hours I paid top money for.
I'ts, on the button, and any parts i fit will be carefully and correctly done.
My buddy on the other hand has just bought one for $2k less than me cause it was a bargain. Guess what, a crank, welding on the cases and a new sleeve later it's not a bargain!
    Just my opinion.

I would go with the stock one too. No telling whats gone wrong with the modified one to cause him to put new pistons in under 100hrs of use.

My experience has been with the ones that are modified unless the guy is a meticulous experienced mechanic you will find many many gotchas. with the oem you know that it is not been altered and if you do the mods yourself you know they will be done right.

The mods to the ski you listed are not that major so it should be ok but look it over well take it out for a test ride.

The only mods you have to worry about are
    Riva Flame Arrestors & Covers
    Jetworks Valve

    Pro-tec 150 psi Head
    Boyessen Reed Stuffers

Ask him him the about the carb jetting , check the plugs then verify it here
For the JetWorks just review the water routing and check the hoses - any signs of heat ?
    Check compression for the head.

Not sure how to check the reeds....

Had problems with both of mine and they were stock other than a rideplate and grate on the 99.
The 97 had electrical problems and carb problems, the flywheel had been welded on and it did fall off.
The 99 had carb problems and blew up after a tank of gas.
you can have problems with modified or stock.
2 things that are an absolute must do are carbs and a compression check.
If you do those 2 things and a leak down test youve prety much got it covered.
You could even buy a new ski and have problems i'll take the moded ski.

Just 80 odd hours on the modded ski before it needed a top end would worry me. Something is not right with that. What happened to need a top end so quickly?
Did what happened cause any other problems? (Im thinking crank).
Could have lost an oil line, starved one cyl and seized.
You never know. On the other hand, it might have been done when the mods were done, just to be sure.
    Who knows!
You don't REALLY know what the compression of the aftermarket head is. It might be hiding a further problem.
On the stock ski if youv'e got 120 psi ish, and all cyls are nearly the same you know youre good.
I still would go with the stocker.

Thanks for the reply's. I tend to agree with what is being said that a new top end at 80h is strange and it may have had a hard life. I've attached some pics of the ski, it's a very clean looking bit of gear.
