Bad fuel pump = bad idle?

    Hi,

My 08 GTI SE 130 is at the dealer for 2 issues:

low rpms at idle (so much so that it sometimes dies)

stubborn starting (due to the low rpm problem, I'm having to start it more than usual)

Dealer thinks the low idle is due to a bad fuel pump and coil sticks.

Also states starting problem is due to starter clutch? It's like the starter is not catching, but it will start after 2-3 attempts.

I have recently replaced plugs, battery and oil.

He wants $340 for the fuel pump, $700 for the starter, and $345 for coils.

I can get a set of aftermarket coils for $120 off ebay, (recommended?) but can I replace the fuel pump myself or do I need someone with BUDS or Candoopro? Does the TPS have to be reset with this job?

I have the shop manual, but I think the starter job is beyond my capabilities.

How does it run at part and full throttle?

No problems at all other than idle.

then IMO it's highly unlikely there's anything wrong with the fuel pump or the coil packs, I'd be looking at the idle control valve

as for the starter, the relays are known to go bad and that's where I would start on that.

Fuel pump will jot cause symptoms you described.

Does the TPS have to be reset with this job?

The only time you need to reset the TPS is if it has been remove or replaced. Or if you change the ECU.

I agree it doesn't sound like a fuel pump issue, but a fuel pressure test will tell you for sure. Sounds more like idle bypass valve, it controls the idle speed. Any fault codes showing, did the dealer hook it up to find out?

$700 for a starter? I think your dealer is trying to rip you off.
