New top end in 1996' 780 SLT with engine in the hull?

Did a compression check today, and got 110pto, 0mid, 110mag.. Pulled the heads and the middle cylinder has some pretty deep scores in the wall. Im assuming a cracked ring?

Can the top end be rebuilt without pulling the whole motor. Looks like removing the exaust is the only thing that will make it difficult. Any body got any tips or tricks?

And what is the general concensus on what could have caused the failure?

Also, Im thinking about the full SBT top end kit with new cylinders. $400.00 seems like a good deal??

Once you have the carbs and exhaust off, you pull the jet pump/drive shaft and the motor isn't that hard to pull out. its much easier and nicer to work on a motor on the bench.

I've come to that conclusion over the last couple of hours!! I've got the cylinders pulled and the middle cylinder does have a broken ring. The fix is simple enough. But I would still like to figure out why it happened. Any ideas??
