Sea Doo GTX ride plate question

I bought a New to me 2006 GTX S.C. Yesterday and it had sat on a Hydroport for sometime. The ride plate has some oxidation and raised rust like material on it. Wanted to see if anyone has cleaned and maybe repainted one with a similar issue? I was thinking I might lightly sand it then paint with a good quality rust inhibitor type spray paint. Other than that the ski is clean and rides great. Any help is appreciated.

You do know the ride plate is the heat exchanger (radiator)

Yes, I know it is the heat exchanger. Anyone know if it will hurt to lightly sand the roughness out and put a coat of good spray paint on it?
