98 Seadoo XPL 951, starter not engaging!!

My seadoo 951 starter/motor ran great last summer. I recently replaced the wiring harness, prior owner tried to fix the vts with the "trim fix" mod. It didnt work. Anyway I replaced the whole wiring harness from mpm back, Starter spins will not engage. Battery is good! 12.4 volts. The engine chasiss ground is sparking when I was loosening/retightening the bolt. Is it suppose to spark?

Sounds like the bendix chipped teeth problem.

Joes rights, I had the same issue. My cause was 98/99 metal was designed wrong and too soft and stripped easily, do a search. Went with a bendix and starter (forgot which was stripped) from a 2001.

I think from 99 on they reprogrammed the mpem to retard the ignition below 300 rpm while its cranking to help the Bendix live a longer healthier life.

Either way you'll need a new bendix at the least. And maybe a new starter if yours has chipped teeth.

So I have to pull the motor again? Is there a certain brand of bendix I should stay away from?
