    Trying to choose a ski

Looking at buying a used 2001 Yamaha XL 800. First time buyer. My wife and I want to joy ride, cruise, tour feel stable on the water. We are also looking at 2 other models: 1999 Kawasaki STX 1100 and 2006 SeaDoo GTX supercharged. Of these three what would we enjoy the most?

The sea doo mostly because of it being a 4 stroke. It is also the largest of the hulls and will be very stable for the two of you.

Ironic that you posted in the Yamaha section and have a reply from a Kawasaki guy but the suggestion is for the sea doo. Granted there are many options out there that would not be out of the price range of these skis you mentioned I would suggest.

Yamaha has several entry level 4 stroke skis over the years that are very reliable and you can get many trouble free hours out of them.

Kawasaki had the STX 12f and 15f along with the Ultra LX introduced in 2007 but same engine as the 15F just a different hull. All the Kawasaki's same as the Yamaha models very economical and reliable.

If you go Seadoo, make sure the supercharger has been rebuilt and with metal washers. The 4 stroke is to be more reliable than 2 stroke and should operate with more trouble free hours requiring no top end rebuilds, but the maintenance is essential.

Don't know that I would get a 65 mph GTX for my first ski, supercharger woes excluded.
Keep looking for a normally aspirated, four-stroke Yamaha FX or FX HO in your price range. Very large, stable ski, great for 2-up riding. You should put 500 hours on it with only regularly scheduled maintenance.

Other than the crappy supercharger washers and crappy timing chains that year, the Seadoo is probably the better option on your list for stability/cruising/touring. That poor XL800 would not be the best choice I dont think.

The seadoo. Make sure the supercharger has been rebuild/washers upgraded or a newer Yamaha 4 stroke

Personally, I would avoid a 2006 supercharged Sea-Doo without a warranty. They were notorious for the ceramic washer issues as mentioned, also dropping valves; we had over $15,000 in warranty repairs on ours. If I were you I would look for a non supercharged Yamaha like an FX-HO or something similar, or better yet, find a newer one that has maybe a year or two left on the extended 5 year warranty, your local Yamaha dealer can transfer this into your name for free, even if you buy it from a private sale.
