Thread: Reading Knock???

Im getting ready to start fine tuning my ski and i was wondering if i should consider tuning by the knock levels?? At what point is a good idea to do this and what are the levels of know for optimum performance? Any tips???

you need data to know when the noise level has knock in it
on a motec log the noise is almost constant then there will a spike in one cylinder that is knock
the motec will cut timing like 3 degrees for a very short time like 5 seconds
if no more knock nothing else is done
now if more knock happens the ecu will cut more timing until it stops
and that long knock value will stay in effect until you clear it or change it
now a stock ecu has this built in and running big rpm
will make more noise than at standard rpms
and it could be seeing knock that is just more noise
you need to log the ecu timing and noise logs
and then you could find where the stock knock level is set
with out a good log of each cylinder your not going to know if its noise or knock

Check this thread out, showing how bad gas causes bad knocking. Also highlights the beauty of the Motec M130 logging capability.

The problem i have now is that i dont know if i can log know with a Vtech logger?? There is noise levels in the logs can that be interpret as knock?

I believe the noise level is what the ecu uses to determine knock
so looking at the noise and the timing you should be able to establish the noise/knock threshold
this will only work if the noise is above knock threshold
put in junk 87 and you should see some knock
the problem is I don't think the vtec logger logs the timing
