    1997 polaris sltx1050

I am thinking of buying my first jet ski. I have a guy trying to sell me a 1997 polaris sltx 1050. He says it has one problem. Says when he presses the on switch the display will not come so there for it won't turn over. He then goes on to to say he can jump out the solenoid and it will turn over. Any suggestion on what the problem could be. He said he bought a new battery new reset switch and power board but still can't not get the display to come on. I just hate to be out $2500

    Welcome

The display has nothing to do with the engine being able to crank over. The display may be dead or just need the fuse replaced. Sometimes a dead display can make the engine run poorly, so the simple test is to unplug the connector from the back of the display. See my signature links for how to remove the MFD from the handlebar pad, if that is how it is mounted.

My guess is that there is a wiring problem or the start solenoid has gone bad. If there is no click from the solenoid when Start is pressed, my guess is wiring problem.

One common failure is if the electrical box was installed without the plastic battery cover in place. This results in a short circuit that typically burns out the black ground wire in the cable bundle running between electrical box and front of the engine. Inspect that cable for signs of excessive heat or charred wires. Repair requires replacing or repairing the magneto stator.

There is an 'ignition upgrade' kit available which includes both a new magneto stator and a new CDI ignition module. Currently sold by SBT, also available from individual sellers.

I will actually be trading a 4 wheeler for it. Would hate to trade a perfectly good 4 wheeler for a project that is going to cost me more money. Don't mind doing alittle work.
