99 Virage Carb - Replacement pistons

Hi all. I am about to replace pistons and cylinders with used pistons and cylinders (about 35 hrs on them). Suffered a meltdown on the top of PTO piston. Problem is I can't see any signs on the top of the pistons as to which side points to the exhaust (covered in a coat of black carbon). I have soaked them in mineral spirits but it is still not coming off. Question: do the ring gaps point in general towards the exhaust or the intake side? That should help me.

logic tells me that the ring gaps are away from the large exhaust port opening. Can someone confirm?
