ZXI 1100 Velocity Stacks or Air Ducts

Just picked up an 03 ZXI 1100 Triple, Upon removing the air box for inspection the velocity stacks, or air ducts, were in several pieces. After removing all debris I called local dealers and they told me they do not stock it. I am planning to order it, but would really like to test run this thing to ensure there is nothing else wrong. Would it be harmful to run it without them in there?

Very likely it WILL cause damage to run it that way! The Constant Velocity carbs (CV) on that model require that the flame arrestor be in place in order to provide the correct vacuum to properly meter the fuel. Without it, it will run uncontrollably lean and possibly seize the engine.

Order the parts and do it right. I just had to replace the tubes on an STX I bought recently. I was surprised at the poor condition they were in.

Or you could get you some '96/'97 ZXI 1100 carbs off eBay and trash the CV's

Yea, then try to figure out where to get the parts to fix the accelerator pump...

SO my 1996 doesn't have these and my 2003 doesn't have them (but found pieces in carb #2). DO I only need to get them for the 2003 ZXI 1100? And not the 1996 ZXI 1100? Thanks STeve45, for all of the great help over the past couple of weeks, you're a ski god ;^)

I just ordered 6 online to be here by Friday. Looks like the parts breakdown has the same part number for the 96 as the 03, so I'm guessing it's the same ones.

There are quite a few people here that know more than I do. I just hop on the computer more when I take a break from work or projects.

No, your '96 won't have them because it has the old style carbs. Yes, you should replace them on the '03.

OK, correction. The carbs are different, but the flame arrestor setup is the same on the '96. It will probably run OK without them, but the '03 may run lean.

They do both have them, but they are NOT the same part number. The '03 has a slot that the '96 does not have.

    '96 14073-3751
    '03 14073-3772

I think you can use the tubes for the '03 in the '96, but you can't use the tubes for the '96 in the '03.
