    drive shaft

1999 yamaha xl 760 bad bearings in impeller drive shaft after removing assembly noticed the end of the shaft had backed down inside the front bearing.Under the plastic nose nipple there was not a nut screwed onto the shaft. I did find that the rear bearing had failed and will have to be replaced. My question is should the shaft have a nut on the end of it where it sticks through the bearing under the nipple? All the schematics i looked at doesnt show the nut on the xl 760 but on all the other models they show a nut. Does anyone know i would be grateful
