on cold starts... no have to crank a while then starts... when warm it's ok but don't want to be on the lake killing the batt on first starts... thinking of redoing the carbs? what do you think

If the carburetors are due for a rebuild, then start there.

Replace old fuel hoses at the same time. New fuel selector valve, good quality hose clamps, etc.

You may find that it starts nicely once everything is as it should be in the fuel system and carburetor.

adding a primer to a 97 isn't a bad idea since the carbs don't have a accelerator pump on the carbs ,hows it start if you hold the choke closed

Have you tried holding throttle fully open with full choke on cold starts, thats the way both of my 1050's come to life!

That will be some good insurance! There pretty straight foward as far as rebuilding goes,I take mine apart every spring before first ride and blow through all jets, vents, etc. The primer will help as mentioned due to the sl1050 having no accel. pump.My sltx has the accelerator pump, but of course there 38's,not 40's.
