    Installing R&D grate on VXR

    Hi all,

After last year's bucking incident, I've ordered the R&D grate and plan on installing it later this week after it arrives. It sounds like it's pretty easy to put on but I'm trying to figure out if I can do it on the trailer or if I'm going to need to have someone do it with a lift and dolly. Right now it's in the water on a Shore Station lift but I don't think I can do it from there. Is there a safe way to flip it in the water and do it from there? Do you think I can do it from the trailer?

    Thanks in advance!

    Jim

I just put a Riva SS grate on my VXR on the trailer with minimal issues, and also installed grates on VXs and an old XL hull on a trailer as well. For the VXR, I did have to push the ski back on the trailer a little bit (like 6-8" away from the keel wheel) to get enough clearance to pull the stock grate off. Personally I would NEVER flip a ski over in the water on purpose, no matter how careful I was, etc.

Thanks for the reply! I was able to install the grate on the Shore Station in the water! I dragged it closer to shore and then reversed the WaveRunner on it and was able to get underneath it. I didn't have any silicone handy but it appears to be working well without it. I may add it later.

Good deal. Anything was better than flipping it over. Amazing difference in the chop on these skis.

Doing it on the trailer is fine. Just check ahead of time and make sure no bunks are in the way. If so, just inch the ski around to a spot where you are open to work on it. It is one of the easiest mods to do on a ski if not the easiest.

Check and make sure that the rear portion of the R&D grate sits flush or slightly lower than the transom. I had to shim mine slightly down to achieve this. When I first put it on I noticed a speed loss and then saw how the grate mounted too low causing a lip in the wrong direction. One I shimmed the grate my speed increased about 1 mph on top of my previous best with the stock grate.

I also had to machine the bolt holes deeper so the bolts sat flush in the rear of the grate. I as was not able to achieve this with the front bolts but did the best I could without removing too much material.

Not sure if mine was a bad one but I bought it recently so just throwing this out there.
