It goes into the plastic slinger thats attached to the gear and the vent valves holds it in place.

Be sure to stuff a shop towel or rag below the cam gear in the chain tunnel BEFORE installing the thrust washer. If you fail do this you may fine it here:

Will it snap into the plastic slinger? Or do you remove the slinger then place the washer in?

No, it does not snap in and can fall out.

Did it do any damage or did you lose it down there

if the plastic is new it does snap in, but once removed it looses that, i normally leave it out until i'm ready for the vent, sometimes use super glue to hold it in

No damage as I did not start the engine......I was working on the ski as it sat on the trailer, installed washer using some grease to hold it in place, hopped of the trailer to get Tops and upon installing the TOPS discovered that bitch had fallen out. Its was easier to remove the engine, then and PTO cover. My pic shows where I found it.
