    What exactly is happening?

High pitched whining sound but no engine cranking?

Have you removed and cleaned the engine end of the negative battery cable? Also remove and clean both heavy red cable ends on the start solenoid.

Much harder to get at is the red cable at the starter motor. All heavy cable end connections must be clean, not corroded. Solid metal to metal contact at every cable connection.

If this machine still has the original start solenoid they are known to go bad. See my signature links for how to tell which version you have.

Yep, it sounds like a moter is turning but it not cranking the engine.
Just had the shaft seal go out, flooded the hull. Got that replaced, then this happened. My thought was the water got into the starter and fouled it.

Starter motor is mounted low on the left side of the engine, directly behind the flywheel housing.

Essentially the starter motor is right under the exhaust manifold and well hidden by the large exhaust pipe attached to the manifold.

The problem may be the Bendix gear which links the starter motor shaft to the actual flywheel. The Bendix gear is inside the flywheel housing and sits behind the actual flywheel. If the Bendix gear is not working properly (rusted or whatever) then the starter motor can spin freely but the Bendix never engages the flywheel so the engine does not crank.

If you suspect water has been (or still is) inside the flywheel housing then you probably need to open it up and inspect. And that means removing the engine, realistically. There just isn't much room to work on the front of the engine when it is in the hull.

Also worth noting is the cables got very hot during the process of un hydro locking the engine. Ie lots of cranking the motor with the plugs out to get the water out.

So the starter motor may have been cooked.

Oddly, the thing started fine for two days prior to this problem. Im guessing to change starters i pull the exhaust. Will the replacment starter include a new bendix

Starter motor just turns a thin shaft with gear teeth on the end, that starter motor shaft sticks into the flywheel housing from the rear.

Inside the flywheel housing the starter motor shaft meshes with the Bendix gear assembly.

The Bendix gear has multiple internal pieces. When the starter motor rapidly spins the Bendix, the Bendix gear extends out and engages with the ring gear teeth on the outer edge of the flywheel.

So the Bendix not only provides a gear reduction drive between the starter motor and the actual flywheel, the Bendix also retracts after the engine has started so the starter motor is not spinning all the time when the engine is running.

    Bendix is item 36.
The starter motor, not shown, would insert into item 13 (which is the ear half of the flywheel housing).
The Bendix gear fits into the front side of item 13

    Starter motor

    MSX 140 Flywheel

This video shows the starter motor location briefly at the 1:00 mark at again at the end.

This is not an MSX engine but the starter motor is the same part in the same location, down low on the left in the video.
