Buying '09 FX HO tomorrow... What to look for?

    Hi All -

First post after lurking a while!

I'm driving a looooooong way (4 hrs each way) to look at / buy an '09 FX HO. Original owner with 46 hrs and has been used in salt water. I'm pretty familiar with what to look for hull wise, but mechanically could use a few pointers.

What should I be looking for under the hood? Should I do a compression test? I know I should take it for a spin, get it warm and make sure it will get to 8K rpms and hold there with no issues.

Ad also mentioned he had a tow-tap valve which I now understand is used to tow the ski over 5mph... How would I find out if he found out the "hard way" that he needed one (e.g. towed it too fast and pushed water into the cylinders)?

Would appreciate any and all advice since it's a long drive to meet a guy I don't know and hand over a ton of cash!

    Thanks in advance!
    Jeff

Yes do a compression test, as it will give you an idea how healthy the engine is. Look for corrosion in the pump area, and in the engine bay. Was it used in fresh or salt water? Personally I prefer and only buy fresh water only skis as they seem to be in better shape. Check the oil before and after your test ride. Make sure to test the oil warm and not cold.

Will do a compression test. I think I am supposed to look for 160 to 180psi and no more than 2% difference across the cylinders. ... Is that correct?

Assuming compression checks out but there's a little bit of surface rust in the engine compartment would you buy it or pass?

How would I check for corrosion in the pump? Should I be looking up through the impeller, through the nozzle?

Just look in the general pump area. Normally there is some on the drive shaft but it shouldn't be excessive. My 08' Kawasaki had a little bit of surface rust on the bolts and it has been running fine, so it should be okay as long as it's nothing crazy. Get under the ski and look through the intake grate to look at the impeller and see the condition.

Shaft was okay. Impeller had a couple of rust spots but OK. Bolts were not Rusty but hose fittings were. Did cold compression test and got between 155-160 on three cylinders and 170 on number four. Lake tested and could not get it above 7500 rpm. However, it was very responsive.

I passed. .... Do you think that was the right decision?

I would have taken it, if it's a hot day you'll lose 300rpms easy
