    Inflatable life vests

Anyone using them when fishing? Specifically the HIT version from Mustang. Been thinking about one. Seems way less bulky than a regular PFD. Thoughts?

I believe that these types of PFDs are not allowed for use on PWCs in most states...

I checked it out as best I can, and from what I can tell they are allowed in Louisiana. I'll ask around a little more before I decide.

REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO PERSONAL WATERCRAFT (PWCS)
Each person riding on a PWC must wear a U.S. Coast Guard–approved Type I, II, III, or V personal flotation device (life jacket).
An operator of a PWC equipped with a lanyard-type ignition safety switch must attach the lanyard to his or her person, clothing, or PFD.
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 16 years to operate a PWC.
It is also unlawful for a person who owns or has charge of a personal watercraft to knowingly permit a person under the age of 16 years to operate the PWC. It is illegal for a rental company to rent a personal watercraft to anyone under 16 years of age.
It is illegal to operate a PWC between sunset and sunrise.

I can't find any mention of inflatable not being appropriate for any vessel. But inflatable is shown and written about in the Type III section of this link.

I need a new PFD and am considering one. The issues are:
I have accidentally fallen off once and wouldn't want to have it go off needlessly,
I have gotten so wet that my personel strobe has gone on,
I like to put ID, VHF, Whistle, etc., in the pocket.

    Still looking though.

Same with me. I would really like to try one but it does not look like they make one with any real storage capacity.

Steve - Look at the HIT types from Mustang. There needs to be 4" of water pressure for the vest to inflate. So spray or rain will not set it off. If you fall in, that is a different story.

Same here. No specific mention of inflatables.
