Damn someone else just posted about a ski blowing up in NJ. I'm new to PWCs and this has me wondering if they are safe.

The skis are safe. Unfortunately the cause is almost always lack of maintenance and repairs.
Too many people think all you have to do is gas-n-go.

My heart go out to them. That's a horrible way to get hurt.

i never even knew this could happen until it happened to my friend yesterday. luckily my friend only has a gas on his leg and is alright. the state cop that were were talking to mentioned he sees it once or twice a year (in nj so only during summer). he also mentioned he has only seen it when someone just started using it for the season or that day, not mid day after running it for a bit.

after it happened i started googling "jet ski explosion" and it isn't as rare as i thought it would have been.

obviously fuel leaks.it could happen to any ski if its not properlly taken care off. a good combination of fumes temp, and a little spark, [not a seadoo spark] real spark.

Had one that the marine detectives determined that it was the battery. Maintenance free, top cap was not sealed properly letting out a gas that caused the explosion.
