WTH? How to remove RAVE cap on DI?

I have taken my RAVE valves off of my 785 many times, but the retaining spring over the black cap is blocked by two bosses formed into the cap on my DI. Is there a "secret" to getting the spring off the cap??? LOL. For the life of me, I can't understand why Rotax put those stupid ears on the cap...

Can't believe that I have not seen a thread on this before. Is that really the secret.....grind them off? I gotta hear the story on what these suckers were for. It's a RAVE, has to have service!

5 second job with a small pair of vise grips and no grinding required.

Unlike a 785, you can simply pull the RAVE as a unit from the motor to clean. Is there a reason the Rotax did not want the cap removed? Those things can't be by accident, LOL.

The cap is a common part with seadoo's sled line-- Skidoo. Screws go through the mounting holes that you see to fasten the cap onto the bodies which skidoo runs a number of different setups relative to the motor they are attached to. When the cap you see is used on a seadoo motor, a pair of small vise grips is used to remove and reinstall the retaining spring. The design and execution on Seadoo's part is solid-- buy a pair of small vise grips.

Hey Jim, thanks for the info. Now, it makes me wonder why screws on a sled and a spring wire on skis, LOL. Again, thanks for the help.

Springs are used on the seadoos because the screw retaining method would require a new base-- communizing between different platforms to reduce part numbers and inventory-- cost reduction with no draw backs aside from forcing the service guy to buy a small set of vise grips if he does not have the hand strength to remove the springs by hand.

Ok. So why not just trim the tab off and never need the vise grips again? If it serves no purpose why work around it. Trash it. 5s mentality here.

You as an owner can modify anything on your seadoo you want to, no reason to modify the caps, but it is your choice for what ever reason.
