Can someone please tell me what this hose on the carb goes to?

Helping a friend work on his 96 Kawasaki XI750 ski. He says that it will run for a few mins and then die as if is turned off. It won't restart for a long time after that but will eventually start and repeat the process. I have checked a variety of things but I found a line on the carb that is not hooked up and I don't know if that could cause the problem. The nipple below that I have circled is completely broke off where it attaches to the body of the carb and the line that is supposed to connect to that nipple is just laying free. Anyone know exactly what this line does?

The bottom left fitting on the back carb is the in fitting. The top left fitting on the back carb is the return line. The front fitting on the front carb is the in line. Run the return line on the back carb to the in line on the front carb. The top left fitting on the front carb is the return line. Run it back to the return fitting on the tank.
The circled one in your pic is the pulse line. It hooks up below carbs onto the cases where they provide the vacuum needed to pump fuel via diaphram.
