01 Virage TX 1200 stopped suddenly

I got this last year and it's run great (100 hrs, $1800). Last week I was crossing the lake at full throttle and it just quit, and won't start again. It cranks strong, new battery this spring, but no spark. My mechanic friend has poked around, in the electric box, no luck.

What's my best bet? Without being able to test all the voltages myself, do I suspect the CDI? I see Martos has them ($$$$) and will test it if you send it to him ($). Is that worth a shot?

Or do I need to have my pal read up here and on K447's pages to do more diagnostics?

    Thanks!

    Welcome

Without doing some diagnostics we would just be guessing.

Certainly there are several straightforward tests that can be done.

Can you guess for me? If you can suggest the first tests to try, I can search for them and it would help get me started as I head to the lake again this weekend.

    Thanks!

Well, you will need to use a multi-meter for some of the tests.

The CDI module itself cannot be directly tested. So what we do is check all the stuff connected to the CDI. If everything else is good, then the CDI becomes the likely suspect.

The CDI requires a certain minimum voltage or it will not provide spark. When the engine is cranking the battery is under heavy load and a weak or degraded battery will not provide enough voltage to crank the engine and power the CDI. The minimum voltage the CDI needs is about 10.6 volts. A strong battery will deliver more than this minimum, while cranking the engine.

The Virage also has a special module which controls power to the CDI (among other things). This is called the LR Start/Stop module. On a carburetor engine the specific part is LR-505.

If the LR module goes bad then the CDI can be without power even if the battery is strong. The LR module can be disconnected and bypassed for testing. Search for LR-505 in the post title to find the bypass details.

Sometimes an electrical wire or ground connection (bolt) will fray or become loose, which can cause the engine to stop. Check that the other electrical parts still work. Bilge pump, MFI display. PERC electric Reverse motor should work while the Bilge button is held down.

One easy test is to simply hold the Bilge button down and see if you now have spark. If yes, the LR module is suspect.

I've searched for an hour, printed the wiring diagram and lots of tips, but I can't for the life of me find the LR-505 bypass details. Not great internet at the lake so trying to gather as much info as possible now. Help?

Thanks for that, I don't know why I couldn't find that. Now i'm working on it. Before I did anything this is what happens:

    lanyard in, start button, cranks
press bilge, it runs, start button, no crank
    lanyard out, start button, cranks
press bilge, it runs, start button, cranks

    all produce no spark

I did the LR-505 bypass, except for the yellow wire which is not a spade, it is shrunk with two other yellow.

Now, every condition above cranks, but still no spark. Does that indicate anything?

This is a new interstate battery, and the display shows 11.5 when cranking. Do I still need to check that the battery is good?

I see that martos will test the CDI for $30. Is that worth a try?

We've now done the LR-505 bypass and ohmed out the stator and as much other stuff as we can to narrow it down to a bad CDI. Martos is the only source I can find. Is there any other place to look? Is it worth sending the CDI to Martos for testing, for $30?
