    Painful for us Polaris fans

Saw this on CL. Can't vouch for the person, but saw some members looking for parts. Don't know how to post the link, so here goes. Craigslist, missouri, lake of the ozarks. Look for August 12, polaris parts and projects - $1 (lake of ozarks). 20 skis.... Sucks to see this. Don't shoot the messenger.

Look on the bright side, all those skis will help keep many more old Polaris skis on the water.

It's now been 10 years since Polaris made it's last PWC, they are no longer required to make or carry any parts for them anymore, we need people/places like this even more then ever.

The supply of parted out Polaris watercraft will continue for a while, I expect. Eventually many of the most needed 'good used' parts will have been sold off and the supply of newly parted out machines will decline.

SBT among others has stepped in to supply generic replacements for some parts and genuine PVL ignition CDI. For parts in demand than can be made/reproduced and sold at a profit, there is hope.

For Polaris specific parts that cost too much to make new and/or cannot be sold in enough volumes to be profitable, these are the parts that will become troublesome as time marches forward.

Especially for parts that are used on only a few models. The plastic hood hinge (used on some SLX and Pro hulls) comes to mind as an example. The Keihin accelerator pump rebuild kits are another.

Molded rubber exhaust hoses are another area of concern. For many of these large curved hoses there are probably 'close enough' substitutes from other watercraft brands or even non-watercraft applications. The challenge is identifying which make/brand/part number the appropriate substitute might be.

In the world of classic cars I have read about a fellow that sifted through warehouses of radiator hoses for current car/truck models looking for hoses that matched the shape and size used on much older cars. In some cases the new substitute hose needed to be trimmed shorter to match up. Once the legwork was done he could offer NEW hoses that actually fit each model of older car/engine.

For some parts it may be possible to adapt a more available part from another brand/model, even non-watercraft. Snowmobiles, for example.

It takes effort to figure out what alternate parts may be usable, then document the part number cross referencing and what needs to be done to adapt the alternate part to fit Polaris.

Exhaust hoses? Go to siliconeintakes.com and build the exhaust hose out of silicone couplers and aluminum straight pipe.
