    2002 polaris virage 800i DI...EMM troubleshoot

    Hello yall.

i have a 2002 polaris virage 800i with a NO SPARK issue, and i have read soooo many different threads dealing with a "no spark" issue from CDI to coil to EMM, is there a quick troubleshooting technique to isolate the EMM as the culprit and avoid troubleshooting other systems?

also this may be a stupid question, i have 20 years as an aircraft mechanic but i can not seem to get the wiring plugs off the back of the EMM....is there a special tool or process of the side retainer clips. i dont want to break those little bastards.

anyway just curious on isolating the EMM first as it seems to be 75% of the resolutions on the polaris 800 no sparkies.

    Hi
The plug at the back of the emm has a bolt in the back in the centre. I thinks its a 4mm allan key to undo it, a pain especially when you cut yourself on the sharp edges and drop the allan key.

I had to pull the EMM bracket loose from the hull the first couple of times I removed the EMM.

+1 on the sharp edges and and the 4mm wrench.

You can check most systems with a good quality voltmeter and a polaris manual.

start at K447's signature links at the bottom of this message.

First stps should be the crank sensor( measure resistance) and the thottle position sensor(unplug)
Then a voltage check when cranking. BTW a poor battery will not allow the system to start.

THere is a dc-dc converter in the emm that boosts the 12v to 26 for starting and then to 45 for running.

All of this stuff is outlined in the troubleshooting pages, but most no spark issues on a polaris are bad emm

After you checked the basics you can pull the emm connectos to check for corrosion. DO NOT probe the conectors..it's easy to damage the pins, which leads to almost impossible to find problems.
