I'm no authority on this subject but ........... Mine went at 73 hrs and started letting water in quite badly.
Due to information and help on this site I went to my dealer who replaced it under warranty.
In my case It was a dodgey ring but Alignment is also an issue.
If you have a good visual you will know if it's running true are if there's any damage to it ...... Good luck!

In a perfect world I guess the Carbon ring would outlast the engine however so many scenarios in which damage can occur to this part or contribute
I really don't see that happening.
However -------- The ring itself and the support plate(ring) were not expensive.
So if your handy at all my dealer had it done in an hour.
mmmm Maybe special tools required ???????
I'll certainly be checking it on a regular basis.

In theory yes it could take 100's of hours to really wear down and become a problem.
But reality is a lot of things can effect the life of the carbon ring and chances are at some point a service center will tell you its time to replace it before your engine dies. Price to swap it out isn't anything crazy. Like the above poster said your only at about hour or two tops in labor and the parts aren't much either. I would think most service centers could do it for under $400.

My brother just picked his ski up today from the shop and they replaced the carbon seal...$380.
