if your riding one up in the surf a yamaha blaster might be the way to go... sporty and easier to throw around

Can not beat a 96XP. Nimble, fast, Jumps well, plenty of upgrades, cheap, easy to repair. Or any of SPX with the 787.

We use and recommend 99-2002 XPLs in the surf. They are stable enough to ride big stuff up to 20 ft and small enough to jump 2ft waves. They carve better than blasters because they dont bounce like them due to there heavier weight. You can stop and rest out the back in the surf where a blaster you cannot, they have a suspension seat which is great when you are coming down from 15 ft and every bit of suspension helps. The handle bars need to be made wider for stability but we like them due to the way they carve unlike flat turning 96-99xps which bounce and become unhooked to easily. You can get to outer reefs easy as they are a cruiser as well and if kept on the low speed fuel circuit they drink juice relatively well for going and coming back to your riding spot
If you get a good one they are a great machine.Have been riding xpls since 98 and wont ride anything else in the surf, before that I rode stand ups for 18 years

I've got both a blaster 1 and xp limited, the xpl is definately the way to go, as surfnturf said, you can stop out back and rest, you can carry a passenger if needed, they are heaps of fun in the surf and have a good stable top speed, plus you can get back on if you fall off. Go with the xpl 951 either a 99 or 00 model...

Ok thanks alot for the info and wasnt aware the blasters were alot more unstable.
So on the 99-02 XPLs what are common problems/areas to look out for and check?

Best XPL is a 99 model for numerous reasons, best XP is the 97.
