Question Virage 2000 701 not starting

Hi guys, Im new to the jetski scene and am learning all the time. I am a production engineer so can understand mechanics.
Bought my first jet ski last week, was running fine for about 3 hours then it died, would not restart RNLI called, very embarracing.

Its the red domestic engine. I have a good spark, compression is good, plugs are getting wet so guessing the fuel is getting in, what whould you all start looking at next? Im using a car battery to rule out low battery power. Im now lost please help.

    Thanks jonjon

    Welcome

If the spark really is strong then check the flywheel timing index. If the woodruff key has sheared then the flywheel will be twisted on the crankshaft.

With front piston at TDC the flywheel should be at 0 degrees when viewed through the inspection port on top of the flywheel housing.

Do you know if this engine was recently rebuilt?

You can find more information via my signature links.

Check timing and it's out by 30 degrees thanks for your advice. Is the best way to remove the fly wheel putting a spanner on the output shaft to stop the engine turning?
    Thanks jonjon

No. Holding one end of the engine while you twist on the other end could possibly twist the crank shaft out of phase.

I use the 'rope trick' method as outlined via my signature links. Insert the rope into the spark plug hole closest to the end you will be working on. But first rotate the engine so the piston is just covering the spark plug ports.

i use a 2nd old flywheel with the 3 bolt threads drilled out.
bolt the old flywheel direct to your good flywheel then you can use your standard 2 or 3 legged puller..

if you use this way be careful how deep you put your bolts into your good flywheel. 10 mm each is enough.
20mm and you will damage your stator..
    tried and tested multiple times..
