94 seadoo xp 650 wont crank easily

Hi.. just rebuilt a 650 rotax engine.. it is very hard to start.. turns over freely by hand with spark plugs removed, and on starter motor. New fully charged battery. Tried bypassing ground cable and connecting starter motor directly to battery as well and this hasnt worked.
I have started and run the engine by adding a car battery with jump leads to the ski battery.. but even this method took a few attempts..
Would this be a bad starter motor?
Its as if there is too much compression for it to turn over, it just stalls the motor and the battery loses a lot of power in a short space of time.

Just to let everyone know I have solved this.. After messing around bypassing cables etc.. I did a voltage check on starter and battery and the battery was dropping quite a lot of volts..
Even though the battery is Brand new this year, It has suffered in a short space of time.
I fitted a brand new battery identical to my other one, and it turns no problem at all. Fired up easily.
Sometimes it is the simplest answer.
