    97 SPX to restore

Just bought a 97 SPX to restore. About 160 psi both cylinders. Engine sounds great. VTS had a blown 7.5 fuse and water in from cracked boot.

Cavitated horribly on first ride. Removed pump. 2mm between impeller and wear ring. SBT white 139.5 on it's way as well as impeller remover tool.

Pulled VTS motor out to find corroded brush spring. Replaced spring. New VTS cover on the way.

20' of 1/4" fuel line is going to replace the grey fuel lines. Ski was bogging down at WOT in ON position. Had to go to reserve to get fuel to the carbs.

I would like to rebuild the carbs. I am concerned because *** I thought the 97 SPX was the same as the 96 XP *** My pump is one piece shorter than the pump on a youTube video of a 96 XP. Looks like the carbs are different from the rebuild kits available from Mikuni. I believe I have the 40I carbs, and the kits are for SBN.

This should be a fun project. I am concerned about motor mounts and engine alignment if I do pull the engine.

Both intake grate bars are broken. What impeller and intake grate would you buy for a stock motor? I would like to send the engine off to GroupK for a sleeper kit install.

Thoughts? I look forward to hearing from you all.

Just did the wear ring. Much better hook up. Also slid the carbon seal boot forward about 1/4 inch.

Still cavitating a bit. Will do the SBT impeller soon.

Next will be the fuel lines and carbs.

Tried to remove the carbs tonight. Stripped the top forward bolt. It was easy to remove from the engine, but it spins the carb when trying to loosen. Only about a turn or two to go and it stripped out. Can't get it to go much more. What should I use to get loosened? Do I have to remove the exhaust manifold so I can spin the carb to get the bolt out?

BTW, bought fuel line and nice clamps IOT replace the tempo lines.
