Thread: Battery charge?

    Battery charge?

When does everyone either charge or place their batteries on a tender? Every ride? Every 4 rides? Every month? Ect.... I have 2 rides and 5 hours on my ski and have been wondering if I need to toss it on the tender? Do these new skis have alternators and charge while you ride?

I live in California and my PWC's are in my garage. So the temps are never extreme. I put my PWC's on a Tender during the off season. During the year I never have them on a tender. If I go while between rides, I throw it on the tender a day before to make sure it is nice and topped off. I am not sure if that is the best protocol, but it works for me. I have a 2009 Yamaha FZR and a 2012 Sea-Doo RXP-X 260.

Im in the pacific northwest, and the ski's are kept outside. When the temp drops, I am definitely bringing the batteries inside, but it says nothing in the manual about whether or not it self charges like a car or boat.

It will have a proper alternator and battery charge system built in. When engine is running the battery is being charged.

Presuming it is working properly, which for a 2014 machine would be expected.

I haven't charged mine since I picked it up may 2013, sat in the ski all last winter. Fired right up in the spring and ran all this season. I had a brand new deka I bought for it but my girl friends battery died in her 04 rxp this year so guess who has that one now

Any modern watercraft that is not a striped down race machine should have a functioning battery charge system from the factory. Been this way for decades.

Batteries should hold a charge for many weeks without any special treatment. The traditional old-school liquid lead acid batteries tend to self discharge if let sitting for more than a month or two. The much better factory sealed AGM batteries can last more than a year without going flat.

I prefer the Deka made ETX series AGM type batteries. Very reliable, long life, strong starting power.

If you do use a small battery charger to maintain the battery charge between uses, make sure it is a smart charger than will properly reduce the charge voltage once the battery is 'full'. Cheaply made electronic chargers or old style 'trickle' chargers can overcharge a watercraft battery and greatly shorten its life.
