1996 Polaris SLTX Not running right

    OK,
    Here we go...

First off, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post.

Just picked up a used 96 Polaris SLTX 1050 in very nice shape.
Rode it twice this summer and it ran fine, till the fuel float sank and gave the perpetual low fuel warning and was running bad. The float sank after apparently being maybe stuck at 5/8 tank, so I went from showing 5/8 tank to empty instantly, filled up and still had the low fuel alarms. After doing some reading on these sites, I obtained a new float and fixed that problem, fuel gauge displays are working again, but the ski has not ran right since.

Since I had the fuel system all apart to fix the float and may have been running on low fuel, I did check the carbs and pulled the screen to check for FOD. Was fine.

I also believe that my compressions are all OK as well.

The ski is not running consistently and I have come to the conclusion that I may be running the OEM stator and CDI and may need the Gen III ignition system update with the 447 CDI box.

The ski fires right up every time, sometime will have limited power, sometimes good power, sometimes awesome power as expected, but once it starts running bad it will only idle and quit. Once power starts to descend it almost always stalls, but am able to always instantly restart it.

If it quits while running up on plane, I can restart it before coming off of plane, waiting for the tach to read zero before trying to restart it, and still sometimes stay up on plane, after the restart.

    Couple of questions.....

I have found the stator and ignition parts on eBay....?
Are there other sources for these parts....??
Does the engine have to come up and out to do this work...?
Are there any dealerships in Central NY that still work on these? (Sharp's...?)

From what I have read, I am pretty sure that I have an old bad Gen I OEM ignition system, that needs the upgrade...

    Thanks,
    Larry

    Welcome

If you have not yet seen it, there is a lot of useful info to be found via my signature links.

You can check the ignition system version by the part number on the CDI (check both sides as the may be a hand written number which overrides the embossed number). Or you can ohm check the magneto stator using the wires in the electrical box. The Gen III ignition update stator has very different coil ohms than the originals.

Does your MFD display work properly? Any signs of moisture inside the display?
If the display is dead or has moisture inside, disconnect it from the connector on the back. A bad MFD can sometimes mess with the ignition system.

While you are inside the electrical box look for signs of corrosion or moisture. It should be completely dry and zero corrosion inside. The factory smeared dielectric grease over the board and metal terminals to help protect from corrosion.

    One more thing...running Champion N6YC spark plugs....thoughts....
I have always ran Champion Plugs in all my polaris machine, (6 sleds)...

MFD is showing no moisture, however there are some faded out bars in some of the digits.
And this seems to come and go as well. When you first start the machine, sometimes you get all "8's" and sometimes you get all "d's".....

I try to store inside the garage on the trailer as much as I can.

    Thanks,
I have read lots of your stuff...

The OEM specified NGK spark plugs are reliable, well understood and are consistent on these engines. People using the NGK spark plugs have good experience and generally no issues with the spark plugs.

Alternate and substitute spark plugs have sometimes turned out to be a source of trouble or mysterious symptoms.

I would also recommend trying different sparkplugs. I like the factory plugs, but if you must use Champion plugs get ones that have resistors. The ignitions in the PWC are not the same as the ones in the sleds.

Verify your compression as well so you can prepare if you need to replace any rings / pistons / cylinders due to low compression.
