Hole in bottom of hull that's impossible to seal!!!

    Hi all,

Ive got a GP1300r with a hole right under the engine in the hull. Its where the middle hull line ends midway back the ski under the engine.

Ive tried fibreglassing/ silicon/ liquid plastic/ riveting on a plastic patch and even sticking a patch of hullguard over it but the pounding of the water on this area when driving always loosens my repair material.

I know ideally the best solution would be to take out the engine so the fibreglass repair has something to key into on the opposite wall of the hull but is there any other way??? Nearly out of ideas here

    Thanks in advance

What type of resin were you using for the repair? I believe the hull is SMC and you must use epoxy not polyester.

There is a technique for patching fiberglass when you don't have access to the backside. Google fiberglass blind hole repair. The big challenge will be you will have to properly clean and prep the back surface since its likely had lots of oil and water over it. Might require making a bigger hole to properly prep the surface of the backside with cleaners or sand paper. You need a repair that sandwiches both sides if its got a chance to be permanent.

Epoxy resin works perfectly on smc. No need for the 3m panel adhesive.

thanks all. Ive got my hands on some 3M panel bonding and Rocketman, just wondering do you use this to stick fibreglass sheets or as a filler on its own.

    Thanks
