    EMM making squealing noise

My 2004 msx 140 EMM started making a squealing noise, I've never heard this before, what does it mean? I even disconnected the battery and it kept making the noise for a while.

    smoke wagon,

    smoke wagon,

Are you sure it wasnt the big capacitor under the EMM?

    When does this noise happen?

how are you sure it is coming from the actual EMM?

The noise happens after it's been started, then it does it all the time running or turned off.
the noise is coming from the area where the EMM is. I don't know what else it could be.

THe large capacitor in underneath the EMM in the foam on the MSX. They can make funny noises especially if they are failing or about to fail.

This is in or out of the water? How long does the sound last after engine shut down?

The EMM internally shuts down shortly after the engine is stopped. The large external capacitor has DC voltage which mostly fades away within a minute or two of engine shutdown.

There are other components in that general area, such as the bilge siphon tubes, the battery and battery vent tube, etc. Is the battery a traditional type with a vent nipple?

Perhaps a stethoscope/microphone or a section of small flex hose to the ear can be used as a sound source probe to narrow down exactly where the sound is coming from.

both in water and out of water.
I use a agm non vented battery, I disconnected the vent lines.
Now when I push the start button the solenoid just clicks and shutters, it will not engage the starter. EMM?, Capacitor?, solenoid?

    thanks.

The start solenoid may be bad but my first guess is that the battery has failed/shorted internally and the sound you hear is the sealed battery out gassing through the pressure release safety vent inside the battery.

Put a decent voltmeter on the battery posts and watch the voltage when you press Start. How low does it sag?

    What brand/age is the battery?

Okay, I will do a complete check on the battery tonight.
I think the battery is 3 years old, it is a YUASA.

    thanks

I pulled out the old battery and yes it appears it bad, it is buldged out and the foam around it is slightly melted obviously it was hot.
So I put in the new battery and accidently reversed the wires. !!!! what a bone head !!!
So i reconnected them proper and now the MFD works but the 15 amp fuse blows on the starter circuit when the starter button is pushed. Okay break me the bad news.
    I am just sick!!
