    impeller nose cone

So I went down to the keys this weekend and all of us ran the skiis into soft mud (thank god) and it doesn't look like the prop or wear ring is damaged. When I started heading back to the boat ramp the ski felt down on power so I figured something was hurt. Upon further inspection I saw the rubber nose cone worked it's way up the driveshaft and is probably the reason for cavitation. After some research I see those of you that ride in saltwater prefer to keep the nose cone on but I also hear there is some type of performance gain by removing it completely. Now I ride in saltwater but Maintain and clean the ski religiously will it be an issue if I remove the cone completely?
