Seven Deadly Questions: Stian Schjetlein
The Watercraft Journal: Stian, could you give me a little background as to how you have gotten involved in jet ski racing?
Stian Schjetlein: Well, when I was 12 a new neighbor moved in a couple of houses down the road. He had an old Yamaha 650 and a Kawasaki SX-R 800 which he let my brother and father try a couple of times. Shortly after, my brother bought the 650 from him and started riding. I didn’t really want to ride jet skis at all at that age. I wanted to start riding Trial instead. My father thought it would be hard and expensive to follow two sons in two different motorsports, so he had me try jet ski a couple of times and after having been to a couple of races with my brother I started racing as well.
WCJ: Tell me a little about your career thus far, what are some of your favorite achievements?
SS: I started at age 13. At age 15 I won all the races in all the Nordic countries in the Junior class. I started racing the Stock and Lites class at age 16 and moved from my Kawasaki SX-R 800 to a Yamaha SuperJet in 2008. This really helped me improve as a rider. The SuperJet suited me way better.
