    buiding a lift sling

After reading storys of webbing coming apart at the seams I decided to just build a pair. Had the metal laying around anyways

    36" long 1" square 11gauge

3" wide flat steel to make the hooks

    About 4' of chain I didn't measure.

So far holding up very well. Click image for larger version.

    Possible design improvements...

If you add vertical lift tabs to the hook plates it will reduce the amount of inward rotation at the lift points.

Move the chain attachment points to the top of the lift tabs.

Bend the top of the lift tabs inwards so the chain attachment points are directly above (or slightly inwards of) the lifting edge of the rub rail lifting hooks. This will keep the lift tabs vertical even under load. Be sure the vertical tabs are tall enough to clear the upper deck sides above the rub rail.

OK... i've been wanting to do this, but i haven't ever seen a set of these in person and i'm too cheap to buy a set. I can't see the profile of the hooks clearly, can someone make a quick paint type sketch of the angles and approximate lengths needed between bends? I like the idea of chain... i will make a set if i can figure out the profile/shape issues...

    Thanks

I thought about this again the other day.. i'd love to know how to profile these... how thick the metal needs to be and what the shape needs to be. I prolly have enough scrap laying around to make a set if i can bend it all in a vice with a torch to heat it up... hopefully i don't need a break to accomplish the bends.

I use the hooks that they attach to the ratchet straps on flat bed trailers.
Have had several slings made for fellow Hulksters.
